Drop back, create more room between you and the car in front of you. Look for the same amount of space between you and the car behind you . Monitor this as you travel along. If the vehicle behind you feels comfortable tailgating you, do not allow their lack of preparation to become your situation later, move to the right, let them pass and when it's safe to do so, assume your preferred lane position.

Defensive driving is key here. Look for puddles on the side of the road/shoulders. Look for breaking lights ahead, not just the car directly in front, but further ahead. Breaking lights are often a sign of trouble, which could easily be avoided if ready, but could become a bad situation if caught off guard.
